macOS 26 may not support these four Mac models: Is yours on the list?

Apple is currently gearing up for WWDC 2025, its annual developers conference, which is scheduled to kick off on June 9. At the event, the tech giant is expected to unveil the next big software update for Mac devices—macOS 26. While many are excited about the upcoming features, a new report suggests that some older Macs may not be compatible with the new version.

According to AppleInsider, macOS 26—codenamed “Cheer”—will likely drop support for several older Intel-based Macs. If true, this means that users of certain MacBook and iMac models may not be able to install the upcoming update.

Here’s the list of Mac devices expected to support macOS 26:

• MacBook Pro 2019 or later
• MacBook Air M1 or later
• iMac 2020 or later
• Mac Pro 2019 or later
• Mac mini M1 or later
• Mac Studio — All models

Four Mac models that are not expected to support the update are:

• 2018 MacBook Pro
• 2020 Intel MacBook Air
• 2017 iMac Pro
• 2018 Mac mini

Meanwhile, 2019 MacBook Pro models and 2020 5K iMac models are expected to remain supported.

macOS 26 is rumoured to introduce visual changes inspired by visionOS, as well as Apple Intelligence enhancements. However, only newer Macs will likely be able to take full advantage of these updates.

The report also mentioned that the first developer beta of macOS 26 could be over 17 GB in size. So, if you’re using one of the older Macs listed above, it might be time to consider an upgrade, especially if you don’t want to miss out on Apple’s latest software experience.
