Google Search gets big upgrades: Agentic coding, Search agents, expanded personal intelligence and more in Google I/O 2026

Google I/O 2026: Google Search is becoming more natural as the Mountain View-based tech giant announced its biggest Search upgrades in years. At the Google IO event, the company introduced AI-powered enhancements that can handle complex queries, hold conversations, remember user information, make reservations, and even complete purchases. Google said the new AI Mode in Search already has more than one billion monthly users, with usage growing rapidly every quarter. As a result, the company is rolling out Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default AI model for Search globally. In addition, Google has redesigned the Search box with AI-powered suggestions and support for text, images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs. The update is now rolling out worldwide in regions where AI Mode is available.

Search agents can track updates for users

Google has introduced search agents that can monitor information across the web and send updates based on a user’s needs. These agents can follow topics like apartment listings, sports news, shopping updates, and social posts.

Moreover, the users can also enter detailed requirements, and the agent will continue scanning the internet in the background. Google says the feature is designed to save time for people who repeatedly search for the same information.

Other than that, the tech firm is adding coding features directly into Search through its Antigravity system and Gemini 3.5 Flash. This will allow Search to create custom visual tools, trackers, and dashboards based on user requests.

For example, users can build a fitness tracker, wedding planner, or moving checklist inside Search itself. These tools can pull in live data such as weather, maps, reviews, and local information to stay updated in real time.

Personal intelligence expands to more users

The company is expanding its Personal Intelligence feature to nearly 200 countries and territories in 98 languages. Users can connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos to receive more personalised responses inside Search.

Google says users will stay in control of their data and can decide when to connect or disconnect these apps. Support for Google Calendar is expected to arrive soon.

Google is also making AI conversations inside Search more seamless. Users can now continue asking follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews while keeping the same context. The feature is rolling out globally across desktop and mobile devices.
