After CEO Dario Amodei calls on the industry to slow the pace of developing AI, Anthropic is hiring a weapons policy expert to help determine how far its Claude AI models should be allowed to go when handling requests related to weapons. The AI giant has opened a Policy Design Manager, Conventional Weapons position in Washington, DC, within its Safeguards team. This role will focus on creating policies and safety measures around potentially harmful uses of Claude, including technologies that have both civilian and military applications.

What will Anthropic’s weapons expert do?
The person hired will help establish where Claude should draw the line between legitimate weapon-related research and requests that can facilitate harmful development. The role involves creating threat models and evaluations to understand how AI could contribute to weapons development.
Anthropic also wants the employee to work with the engineers on safeguards, detection systems and enforcement mechanisms. The position covers conventional weapons as well as areas such as robotics, software, sensors, guidance tech and autonomous systems capable of selecting and engaging targets without direct human approval.
The company is looking for candidates with practical experience in weapons systems, preferably from defence research, government agencies, or weapons companies. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required, while expertise in AI, robotics, autonomous systems, or aerospace engineering is listed as desirable.
Salary?
Anthropic has listed an annual salary range of $245,000 to $285,000 for the position, depending on the candidate and level. At the upper end, that is roughly Rs 2.7 crore a year based on current exchange rates.
This comes at a time when frontier AI development needs to be deliberately paced so safety measures can keep up with increasingly capable models. His proposal includes independent safety evaluations and greater coordination between AI companies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk have publicly supported aspects of the proposal.
