Microsoft announces Xbox mode for Windows 11 PCs: What it is, features and expected release
Microsoft announces Xbox Mode for Windows 11 PCs at GDC 2026.
New interface provides a controller-optimized, full-screen gaming experience.
Stable update rolls out to all Windows 11 PCs in April.
Ever since the announcement of the Xbox Ally and the Xbox Ally X, one of the most-awaited features that made its way to Windows was the Xbox full-screen experience. At first, it was limited only to handhelds, but slowly, it was also being rolled out to Windows 11 preview builds. But most recently, at the GDC (Game Developers Conference) 2026, during their showcase of Project Helix, Microsoft announced that they are renaming the full-screen experience to ‘Xbox mode’. Not only that, but they’ve also stated that the mode will be rolled out to every Windows 11 PC. Let’s take a look at everything the new Xbox mode brings.

Xbox mode on Windows 11: Everything new

As per Microsoft, the latest Xbox mode is being targeted as a controller-friendly interface designed for gaming on Windows devices, including laptops, desktops and tablets. The ‘Xbox mode’ works by providing a full-screen interface that has been optimised for controllers, allowing players to browse their game library, launch titles, access Game Bar tools and switch between apps more easily than before.
Given the recent surge in popularity of SteamOS and the upcoming Steam Machine, it does make sense that Microsoft would be looking to bring this feature to Windows as soon as possible. Not only that, but with the feature, it would also help bridge the gap that Microsoft is trying to for the launch of their next-gen Xbox, codenamed Project Helix.
When will the new mode be released?
Alongside announcing the new update, Microsoft also gave out a release timeline for the latest update. While the previous versions had been limited only to the preview builds, this new mode will be available in the stable updates of Windows 11, rolling out from April next month.
Talking about the update rollout dates for the Xbox mode on Windows PCs, Jason Ronald, vice president of Xbox, said, “After debuting an early version with the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, today I’m excited to share that we are bringing the same innovation to Windows 11 with Xbox mode that begins rolling out in April, starting with select markets.”
Further explaining about the features of the mode, he explained that “Xbox mode lets players seamlessly switch between productivity and play, with a familiar full screen and controller optimized Xbox experience while embracing the openness of Windows.”
