Uber responds to accusations of showing different prices to Android and iPhone users, says…
Many users alleged that iPhone owners were charged higher fares for identical rides.
The CCPA had started an investigation to address these claims.
An Uber spokesperson told Reuters, “We do not set prices based on a rider's phone manufacturer."
On social media, for a while now, netizens have been claiming that there has been a price discrepancy in the prices that Uber and Ola show to iPhone and Android users. Users claimed that these platforms set ride prices based on the user’s phone model. Responding to these claims, the Central Consumer Protection Agency (CCPA) sent notices to Uber and Ola. The former has now responded to these allegations.
Many users alleged that iPhone owners were charged higher fares for identical rides compared to Android users. Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi had previously shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the CCPA had started an investigation to address these claims. Joshi called out these strategies as “unfair trade practices” and a “blatant disregard” for consumer rights.
Responding to the allegations circulating on social media, an Uber spokesperson told Reuters, “We do not set prices based on a rider’s phone manufacturer. We look forward to working with the Central Consumer Protection Authority to clear up any misunderstanding.” Ola, Google, and Apple have not commented on the allegations, and Ola is yet to respond to the notice.
These claims have further led CCPA to set out investigations into other spaces too. Joshi announced plans to direct the CCPA to investigate similar pricing models in other sectors, such as food delivery and online ticketing platforms, raising questions about broader industry practices.
These concerns, if valid or not, are yet to be addressed properly. However, they highlight the growing consumer concerns over transparency and fairness in pricing models used by tech-driven services.
Let’s see how this investigation progresses and what solution is derived. A response from Ola is also awaited. We will keep you updated on it.
