Nothing decides to bring its own iMessage: Will Apple stay ‘Muted’?

Nothing has introduced the 'Nothing Chats', which will allow you to text on iMessage.

Nothing is working with Sunbird to make 'Nothing Chats'.

It's great news that Nothing will allow Android to text on iMessage, but that raises so many questions about privacy.

Apple’s iMessage is a widely known app for texting and calling, and it’s quite fun too. However, many Android users want to use iMessage on their Android smartphones, which was not possible, until now. Nothing has introduced the ‘Nothing Chats’, which will allow you to text iMessage, which is no longer Apple exclusive, I guess. This means from an Android smartphone, you will be able to text to an iPhone in “Blue Bubble”!

However, this move has been creating a lot of doubts, concerning security and privacy. The biggest of them is about the Apple ID credentials. I have an Apple iPhone, which has almost all my details, from my bank account to my birth. Now we all trust Apple with this information, which I think is not good either, but anyway, we don’t have an option. However, I am not ready to trust another brand with my information, especially a brand that is working with a not-so-popular company, Sunbird.

What is Sunbird?

So Sunbird is basically a company that has been trying to get into Apple’s iMessage from Android for a long time now. In addition to that, Nothing is working with Sunbird to make ‘Nothing Chats’. Coming to the main part now, Sunbird has its own history. The company has been on this mission ever since its launch in December 2022.

Ron, a Reviews Editor from ArsTechnica, went to attend the launch of Sunbird. During the event, he asked questions about how this will work and how will they ensure security and privacy. Unfortunately, the brand didn’t respond, leaving even more suspicions. Speaking of the chats, it is yet not confirmed whether they will be end-to-end encrypted or not.

Now what will be Apple’s next move on this? It’s pretty obvious that a tech giant like Apple would never allow another brand to get into one of its features (without an agreement), and that too with the help of a third-party client.

Will Apple stay quiet?

Well, I don’t think so. If this happens, Apple will come after Nothing, locked and loaded. Apple believes that iMessage on Android would not bring any good to the company. Just because some people don’t want an iPhone but want to use the advantages of an iPhone on an Android without Apple’s permission doesn’t seem like a convincing enough reason.

Interestingly, Nothing and Sunbird, both seem way more relaxed than they should be. According to a report by the Washington Post, Nothing CEO Carl Pei said, “There’s nothing illegal about this setup. I think whatever we do is gonna be passed along within Cupertino, but we’re so small that it will look really bad if Apple takes any action.” Further, Sunbird CEO Danny Mizrahi added, “We don’t see a scenario where Apple tries to, or can, block these messages. Apple’s focus has openly been on providing the best experience to their end users and both Nothing Chats and Sunbird help with that.”

This shows that they are definitely expecting some tension from Apple’s side.

This is great news that Nothing is now able to offer iMessage for Android but that raises so many questions. Will the security and privacy be its concern? Will this also work on iPads, iMacs, and Macbooks? Will my Apple ID credentials be safe? Will Nothing and Sunbird store the data on their servers?

Sadly, we are not sure about any of the questions mentioned above, yet. So stay tuned for more updates on the same.
