Netflix releases Transfer Profile to help users set up their own membership
HIGHLIGHTS

Netflix has released a new feature called Transfer Profile.

It helps users to migrate their data and set up their own membership.

The Transfer Profile feature is another effort to encourage users to get their own Netflix account.

On October 17, 2022, Netflix announced a feature that will help users migrate their profile details from one account to another called Profile Transfer. The feature has been in development since March 2022 and was tested by Netflix in Peru, Costa Rica and Chile. The Profile Transfer feature comes when Netflix is trying to minimise the number of password sharers and increase the number of individual members.

Here is what the Netflix Profile Transfer feature does

The official blog post mentions that the Netflix Profile Transfer feature helps users transfer a profile while “keeping the personalised recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and other settings.” The language used in the press release clearly shows that the OTT platform has released this feature for those who don’t have “their own membership,” and are viewing content on Netflix through someone else’s account.

To transfer a Netflix profile, users should go to the Transfer Profile option that appears when they hover over their profile icon in the dropdown menu on the homepage. After that, Netflix will show a couple of instructions, following which users can successfully transfer their profile from another Netflix account to their account. Users will be notified by email as soon as the Profile Transfer feature becomes available for their account. Those not requiring the feature can turn it off in their account settings.

The content streaming platform wants users to get their own subscription

In 2022, Netflix has been losing its subscribers due to increasing competition from other on-demand services such as Hulu. Hence, it has been trying to curb the loss of subscribers by planning a more affordable subscription plan that supports ads and asking people to use their own Netflix account rather than stream via another account. Further, the company is also testing ways to charge users when they share their password with others.
