Google launches lightweight Gmail Go app for Android
  • The Gmail Go app is meant to work on patchy networks and is a lite version of the full-fledged Gmail app.

Google has released a new Gmail Go app, which is aimed at devices with low specs. It is the company’s newest app to join the Go apps lineup and is a 'lite' version of the original Gmail app. The Gmail Go app can work on patchy networks and allows reading and replying to messages offline as well. It retains most features from the original app like sorting mails under different labels like Primary, Social, Promotions and more.

The Gmail Go app supports new mail notifications, comes with 15GB of free storage and a spam filter. It also comes with the functionality of adding both Gmail and non-Gmail addresses like Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com, or other IMAP/POP accounts. However, it only supports devices running on Android 8.1 and is expected to be present on Android Oreo (Go Edition) devices.

Google had announced that the Android Oreo (Go Edition) smartphones will come with Android Go Apps. These apps are optimised for working efficiently on devices with slower hardware and some of the apps are Google Go, Maps Go, YouTube Go, Files Go, Assistant Go, and more.

The Android Go (Oreo Edition) was annnounced in December last year. It is a light-weight Android version of Oreo made for low-end phones with less than 1GB of RAM. It can simply be enabled by simply ticking off a configuration flag. The company also confirmed that Android Go will be updated with each iteration of Android, such as Android P (Go Edition), Android Q (Go Edition) and so forth. So far, Micromax, Intex, Lava and even Reliance Jio is rumoured to be working on releasing phones running Android Oreo (Go Edition). You can read more about the OS here.
