HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Aspire 5 is the latest thin and light gaming laptop from Acer with a price tag of around ₹60,000

  • The laptop is powered by the Intel 12th Gen Core i5-1240P 12-Core processor and an Nvidia RTX 2050 GPU

  • The laptop also gets 8GB DDR4 memory and 512GB SSD storage

The brand new Acer Aspire 5 is the latest thin and light gaming laptop and probably the first one to feature the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2050. A lot of heads, and eyes, rolled when Nvidia announced its RTX 20XX series laptop GPU. Its latest desktop GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1630, proved to be a disappointment in several ways so hopes for the RTX 2050 series weren’t high.

However, the use case and the laptop category the RTX 2050 finds itself in is ultimately its saving grace. It is a low-powered GPU particularly useful for light gaming on the go. As a result, it finds its perfect home in the Acer Aspire 5 which is a thin and light mainstream laptop series. Thus, here’s the performance you can expect from the Nvidia RTX 2050.

Acer Aspire 5 Benchmark Performance

Acer Aspire 5 Gaming laptop performance review

Starting off with the most holistic benchmark, the PC Mark 10, we can see that the Acer Aspire 5 gives us a score of around 5148, along with a gaming score of 5527, which is pretty decent in its category. Usually, the scores for such laptops are around the 1100 to 1500 range for the integrated GPU performance.

Moving on to CPU performance and we see an obvious increase in a massive increase in figures thanks to a multi-core processor. The Intel 12th Gen Core i5-1240P is a 12-core 14-thread processor which scores around 9816, which is sort of equivalent to last gen’s AMD Ryzen 5 5600H Hexa-core APU. Similarly, the processor scored around 3828, which is also a decent figure.

In terms of GPU benchmarks, the Acer Aspire 5 seems to fit somewhere below the Nvidia GTX 1650, which is one of the most popular entry-level GPUs. I suppose it could perform better in any other laptop but with a 35W max TGP limit, there’s only so much an RTX 2050 can do. Overall, the GPU is decent enough for light gaming. It is more powerful than an AMD integrated APU or an Intel Iris XE GPU but not powerful enough to beat an Nvidia GTX 1650 in a dedicated gaming laptop.

Even in terms of thermal performance, the Acer Aspire 5 scores great numbers. We tested the surface temperature of the laptop in three key areas. Near the middle of the keyboard, the peak recorded temperature was 40.8 degrees Celcius, meanwhile, near the W, A, S, and D keys the highest noted temperature was 34.1 degrees Celcius and near the palm rest area, the laptop remained very cool with a peak temperature of 30.2-degree Celcius.

Acer Aspire 5 Display Performance

The Acer Aspire 5 comes equipped with a 15.6-inch IPS LCD display with maximum resolution support for 1920 X 1080 pixels. Additionally, the laptop comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio format and also has a limited refresh rate of up to 60Hz. This refresh rate is more than enough for the kind of gaming this laptop is capable of.

Furthermore, this laptop has around 277 nits of maximum brightness and 68.2% sRGB colour spectrum coverage. The device also has 50.5% of DCI-P3 colour spectrum coverage as well. Overall, it is a decent screen for most scenarios including gaming.

In terms of gaming performance, the Acer Aspire 5 powered by the Intel 12th Gen Core i5-1240P 12-core processor and Nvidia RTX 2050 GPU featuring 4GB GDDR6 VRAM performs like an entry gaming laptop. Its thin and light form factor does cut its performance down to a few notches but it is still able to deliver a playable frame rate in popular games at 1080p resolution and high graphical preset. Furthermore, users can optimize their gaming performance by reducing the resolution and graphical fidelity. Here’s how the laptop performs.

In titles like GTA V and Valorant, the RTX 2050 performs decently well delivering high FPS at 1080p resolution. Meanwhile, in demanding titles like AC Valhalla, Dirt 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Gears 5, the laptop delivers around 30-40 FPS in 1080p resolution.

Acer Aspire 5 Gaming Performance Review Conclusion

The combination of Intel 12th Gen Core i5-1240P and the Nvidia RTX 2050 makes the Aspire 5 a highly affordable gaming machine as well. In addition to adding gaming prowess, the Aspire 5 is also a great everyday work laptop thanks to a good keyboard and trackpad combination. As a result the Acer Aspire 5, priced at around ₹60,000, is a great value for money portable gaming laptop.
