Kärcher expands local manufacturing in India, eyes growth in consumer cleaning products

Kärcher has expanded its manufacturing footprint in India with a new range of locally produced professional cleaning machines, as the German company looks to strengthen its position in the market. The announcement came during a media event at its Training Centre in Noida on October 9, where the company showcased its new professional cleaning equipment and discussed its consumer business, including air purifiers and robot vacuum cleaners.

The company’s consumer business currently accounts for around 20% of its operations in India, with professional cleaning equipment contributing the remaining 80%. While the event’s main announcement centred on professional machines, the discussion also offered a glimpse into Kärcher’s approach to household cleaning products, particularly the challenge of making them more accessible to Indian consumers.

Kärcher introduces new range of locally manufactured cleaning machines in India

The new locally manufactured range covers floor care, sweeping and high-pressure cleaning. It includes two scrubber-dryers, a single-disc machine, a vacuum sweeper, a ride-on scrubber-dryer, a cold-water high-pressure cleaner and a manual sweeper.

Kärcher says the machines are designed for Indian operating conditions, including high dust levels, demanding industrial environments and extended operating cycles. Features include sealed electronics, dust-focused filtration, rugged structural components and provisions for easier maintenance. The company also subjects the machines to 100-hour stress tests.

An important part of the expansion is the extent of localisation. Rather than limiting domestic production to final assembly, Kärcher is manufacturing components such as steel chassis, roto-moulded tanks and cast brush decks in India. The move is intended to increase domestic value addition and improve product availability and service support for commercial and industrial customers.

The expansion is part of Kärcher’s Strategy 2030, under which India is expected to play a larger role in its manufacturing network. The company is targeting strong double-digit annual production growth across its localised product lines.

Air purifiers and pricing were part of the discussion

Beyond professional cleaning equipment, Kärcher also discussed its consumer business at the event. Prashant Srirangam, Senior Director at Kärcher India, said the company is looking at the Rs 7,000 – Rs 9,000 price segment for air purifiers, with affordability being an important consideration for Indian consumers.

This was discussed as a potential price range, not a confirmed launch price. Kärcher already sells air purifiers in India, including the AF 20, AF 30 and AF 50, so the conversation centred on affordability rather than the company entering the category for the first time.

Srirangam also spoke about the pricing challenge in India, where buyers are often sensitive to the cost of air purifiers. Kärcher has electrostatic or ionic purification technology in its global portfolio, but it is not available in India at present. The company is looking at the Rs 7,000– Rs 9,000 segment, though it has not announced a specific model or launch date at this price.

Robot vacuum cleaners are already in Kärcher’s portfolio

Robot vacuum cleaners also came up during the discussion. Kärcher already sells the RCV 3 and RCV 5 in India, both of which support vacuuming and mopping. The models offer app-based controls and home mapping, while the RCV 5 also features camera-based obstacle detection.

Srirangam highlighted the growing interest in robotic cleaning and referred to growth of around 40–50% in the category. The timeframe and source for this estimate were not specified during the interaction.

The discussion also touched on handheld vacuum cleaners, particularly their use for cleaning car interiors. These products address a different requirement from robot vacuums, but both reflect the range of cleaning tasks consumers want to handle with less manual effort.

India’s role extends beyond the consumer market

Kärcher’s latest manufacturing expansion is aimed primarily at commercial and industrial customers. The locally produced machines are intended for applications across sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, hospitality, automotive and infrastructure.

Kärcher is also increasing the number of components it makes in India, including steel chassis, tanks and brush decks. This will help the company source more parts locally and build its manufacturing operations in the country.

For now, the manufacturing announcement and the consumer products discussed at the event represent distinct parts of Kärcher’s Indian business. The new machines expand its domestic production capabilities, while the conversation around air purifiers and robot vacuums highlights the consumer categories it already serves and the pricing considerations involved in growing that business.
