Don’t buy an air purifier without checking its filter replacement cost: Here’s why

Winter is almost here in North India, and with it comes the annual return of air pollution to everyday conversations. In Delhi-NCR, this cycle is especially familiar. As the air gets worse, concerns around pollution rise again, and air purifiers inevitably become a much bigger part of the conversation.

People who may have ignored these machines for most of the year suddenly start looking at them seriously, especially when pollution becomes difficult to ignore inside and outside their homes. I understand that impulse because, living in Delhi-NCR, I’ve seen how quickly the season can change the way you think about indoor air.

For many buyers, though, the decision ends when the purifier comes home. You pay for the machine, set it up, and expect it to do its job. The filter that comes with it rarely gets much thought because it feels like just another component sitting inside the box.
Earlier, I used to view air purifiers only through the reviewer perspective, so I never used to give much thought to the replacement filter cost. But now that I’ve started looking at purifiers from an ownership perspective rather than just as products being reviewed, the replacement filter became something I wanted to know about before committing to a model.
It changed how I look at seasonal purchases
When pollution disappears from the headlines for a few months, it is easy to think of an air purifier as an occasional appliance. Come winter, its place in the home can be very different. It can become one of those machines you switch on almost automatically when you enter the home, keep running while working, and leave on at night.
A filter replacement isn’t an abstract future expense in that situation. It is part of keeping the appliance functional, much like other consumables are with appliances we use regularly. I don’t think buyers need to obsess over the exact rupee figure before purchasing a purifier, but completely ignoring it makes little sense to me.
This is also why I now find the filter itself more interesting than I used to. Two purifiers can sit next to each other with similar-looking specifications, yet the ownership experience can be quite different once you get beyond the machine itself.
Air purifier sales will probably get another seasonal push as North India heads into another winter of pollution. For someone buying one because they genuinely want to rely on it during this period, I’d rather know what the filter replacement looks like before bringing the machine home.
While it isn’t the most exciting part of an air purifier purchase, It’s simply one I wouldn’t suggest anyone overlook anymore.
