Bharti Airtel, the largest telecom service provider in the country is expanding its 4G VoLTE services to Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Airtel launched its 4G VoLTE service last month and it went live first in Mumbai. The company plans to expand the service across India by the end of the current financial year.

"We are delighted to announce the addition of VoLTE capabilities on our 4G network in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as it enables high definition voice qualities and faster call set up time," Dharmender Khajuria, Chief Executive Officer, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Bharti Airtel, told PTI.

Airtel currently offers voice services over traditional circuit-switch technology on 2G or 3G networks while VoLTE or voice over LTE uses the same network as mobile data to support high definition audio calling. With VoLTE rollout, Bharti Airtel has become the first major telecom service provider to support the service. The rollout of VoLTE calling will help Airtel better compete with Jio, which has been calling its VoLTE support as one of the differentiating features.

Earlier reports suggested that Airtel has conducted trials with nearly 15 device models and Khajuria added that service will be available on popular 4G/LTE enabled smartphones. With the rollout of 4G VoLTE services, Airtel will be able to free up its 3G and 2G airwaves. The company is expected to refarm its 3G bandwidth to offer 4G data services. With Airtel having launched its VoLTE service and expanding it to different cities, other major telecom operators like Vodafone and Idea Cellular are also expected to add VoLTE support sooner than later.
