Samsung’s Unpacked 2018 event is finally here. At 10:30 PM IST, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ ahead of MWC 2018 in Barcelona. The event will be livestreamed in India via Samsung India Newsroom. You can watch the live event here. In case you are desperate to know what Samsung’s 2018 flagships will bring to the table, a series of leaks and renders have spilled most of the beans. While Samsung won’t be quite happy to have the fun spoiled, it gives us the ability to tell you in advance what the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ will be like.
Multiple leaks have indicated Samsung will once again launch two versions of the Galaxy S9. Only this time, there will be more separating the two variants than just the screen size and battery. The Galaxy S9+ is expected to come with a dual camera stack at the back while the Galaxy S9 will retain the single camera setup. The smaller Galaxy S9 will come with a screen size of 5.8-inch while the Galaxy S9+ will sport a larger 6.2-inch Super AMOLED panel. Both phones will have the edge-to-edge Infinity Display of 18:9 aspect ratio.
The design of the phones is likely to remain mostly the same, although based on leaked renders, the fingerprint sensor might be housed in a more comfortable location which will make it easier to access.
The most important part of the phones this time around, will be the rear camera. While the smaller Galaxy S9 is tipped to sport a single-lens camera at the back, the Galaxy S9+ will have dual 12-megapixel cameras which will be a first for the Galaxy S lineup of phones, after the Galaxy Note 8 last year.
The dual camera on the S9+ will not only bring depth-of-field trickery, but also something even more remarkable — Variable aperture. The camera is rumoured to switch between two different aperture modes. And this feature is also likely to be present in the smaller Galaxy S9 as well.
But that’s not all. The Galaxy S9 is also tipped to bring Super Slo-Mo videos as well that will be recorded at 960 FPS.
The phones will be powered by Samsung’s new Exynos 9810 chipsets globally while the Snapdragon 845 will power the phones in select regions. The phones will have iPhone X-like AI trickery including a secure face unlock and animated emoji.
Lastly, the phones are going to be pricier than last year. Based on leaks, the Galaxy S9 will be priced at EUR 841 (roughly Rs 67,000) while the Galaxy S9+ is expected to be priced at EUR 997 (roughly Rs 80,000).
The phone will launch at the sidelines of MWC in a venue in Barcelona. We will be there reporting live from the event and will be testing out the new flagship phones thoroughly.
