Nokia reportedly working on Snapdragon 710 powered “Phoenix” smartphone

Nokia reportedly working on Snapdragon 710 powered “Phoenix” smartphone
HIGHLIGHTS

The device will reportedly be announced by HMD Global in the autumn/winter 2018 timeframe.

Nokia recently announced its refreshed lineup of entry-level and mid-range smartphones, the Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1, and the Nokia 5.1. Now, frequent tipster Roland Quandt claims that the company is also working on a smartphone codenamed “Phoenix”, which will be powered by Qualcomm’s recently unveiled mid-range Snapdragon 710 SoC. This smartphone is said to be released in the autumn/winter 2018 timeframe. The tipster also adds that the alleged Snapdragon 710-powered smartphone by Google, which he previously reported about, is codenamed “Bonito”.

Other than what’s stated above, there is no additional information on the upcoming Nokia smartphone yet. The SDM 710 processor, which could be running the device, was announced last month and it debuted with the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. The System on Chip slots between Qualcomm’s 800 and 600 series of processors and as one might guess, is not as powerful as the SDM 845 but claims 20% increase in performance and 40% decrease in power consumption when compared with the Snapdragon 660.

As mentioned earlier, Quandt says that Google’s rumoured upcoming smartphone with the Snapdragon 710 SoC is called “Bonito”.  We speculate that this is more of an internal codename assigned to the device, if there is one. Additionally, going by the rumours circulating on the internet, it might be the mid-range Pixel smartphone which is reportedly under development for Indian users and could launch in early 2019.

Speaking of Pixel smartphones, Google is expected to unveil its Pixel 3 series of devices at the Hardware event in a few months. Even though it’s quite early to make any assumptions, a couple of reports till now suggest that at least one Pixel 3 device could sport a notch on its display. A previous report also tipped that once again, LG will be manufacturing displays for the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL smartphones and the OLED panels are said to come with a notch on top, similar to the recently launched LG G7 ThinQ smartphone.

It was said in a separate report that Google is handing over the production of its Pixel 3 device to contract manufacturer Foxconn. To be precise, a subsidiary of Foxconn, FIH Mobile, is said to have been assigned the task of making the next Pixel devices. Going by the information from the reports we have come across so far,  the Pixel 3 XL is the larger variant with a “nearly edge-to-edge” display with a notch on top. The Pixel 3 is said to be a smaller device, which features an 18:9 display aspect ratio and comes without a notch. You can read more of the report on Pixel 3 smartphones here.
