Motorola unveils Android-based budget smartphone XT316

Motorola has unveiled its new Android-based smartphone for markets outside the US. The phone codenamed XT316 is a budget phone and comes with a full QWERTY keypboard. According to reports, the phone is likely to be pitted against the likes of the Nokia E5 and the BlackBerry Curve 3G.

Reports say Motorola will launch the phone as “Fire” in Europe and “Spice Key” in Latin America. In Asia, the phone will be launched in Hong Kong and Taiwan later this summer. The phone is already available in China though.

Motorola XT316 comes with a 2.8-inch low-resolution QVGA display and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo – upgradeable to Android 2.3. It has a 600MHz ARM 11 CPU, with Adreno 200 graphics, and 256MB RAM. The phone also has a 3MP camera, 512MB inbuilt storage, microSD expandability, Wi-Fi, GPS, FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth and a 1420mAh battery. The storage is extendable up to 32GB in capacity with microSD memory cards.

There’s no word on price from Motorola, reports stress the price of the smartphone is likely to be very low.
