iPhone 5 sales surpass 2 million units over first weekend in China
Apple’s sixth generation iPhone, the iPhone 5, has set record sales for the company in China after it went on sale on Friday. Over the weekend, the smartphone sold over two million units.
“Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,” said Tim Cook, Apple CEO, in a statement. “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”
China is the second largest market for Apple after the US and has already accounted for 15% ($23.8 billion) of the company’s revenue for its fiscal year that ended in September.
When the iPhone 5 first launched in the US, its sales crossed the five million mark in the first weekend, which was a million units higher than the iPhone 4S.
Apple’s iPhone 5 is available in India for a starting price of Rs. 45,500. Under the hood, the Apple A6 dual-core 1.2GHz processor and 1GB RAM power the device. It has a 4-inch 1136 x 640 pixels display and PowerVR SGX543MP3 graphics. Its built-in storage is 16/32/64GB with no expansion options. The rear houses an 8MP iSight camera and the front has a video-calling camera. The battery is 1440mAh and the device runs on apple’s latest platform, iOS 6.
