Apple has officially confirmed that it will host its upcoming fall launch event on September 9, with invitations already sent out to the media. This year, the tech giant is expected to unveil its next-generation iPhones, comprising the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 17 Air, replacing the Plus-sized model.
SurveyWhile Apple remains tight-lipped about the details, leaks and reports have pointed to significant design and hardware changes. Among all the changes, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is speculated to see its most notable overhaul in years. Here are five changes that we expect to see in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Design
The most notable change on iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to be the redesigned camera island. Leaks suggest that the tech giant could be finally moving away from the vertically stacked triple-camera layout. The device might feature a new rectangular camera island that spans side to side, similar to the one seen on Google Pixel phones.
However, with this redesign, the phone is also expected to get thicker by around 0.48mm. It could sport a thickness of 8.73mm compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 8.25mm.
Another change that Apple is speculated to bring is switching from titanium back to an aluminium frame. This would make the phone lighter and more durable.
iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Display
In terms of display, the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max is unlikely to undergo any significant changes over its predecessor; however, it may receive a few refinements, including a slimmed-down Dynamic Island cutout, Samsung’s M14 OLED panels, and an increase in peak brightness from 2,000 nits to nearly 3,000 nits. Additionally, there are rumours that Apple is considering adding an anti-reflective coating to the screen, which would improve visibility under bright outdoor conditions.
Apart from these upgrades, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to retain the same 6.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR panel with 120Hz ProMotion as the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Processor and RAM
The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to pack the Apple A19 Pro chipset, the company’s third-gen 3nm chipset. The device may offer improved performance and efficiency as compared to the Apple A18 Pro and the A17 Pro chips.
Further, the device is also rumoured to ship with 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB on iPhone 16 Pro Max.
iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Camera
In terms of camera, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to receive a significant upgrade, featuring a 48MP periscope camera, a major leap from the current 12MP sensor on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This means the device will have all three cameras, 48MP.
On the front, a 24MP selfie camera could replace the existing 12MP camera on the predecessor. Apart from these, the upcoming handset is also said to get 8K video recording support.

Do note that none of these details is officially confirmed. So, wait till September 9, when the device goes official, and we will have all the details.
