Google promises to fix slow-to-wake bug on the Pixel 2 XL

Google promises to fix slow-to-wake bug on the Pixel 2 XL
HIGHLIGHTS

The Google Pixel 2 XL was taking its own sweet time to wake up after the most recent security update. Google promised to fix it permanently and gave a temporary solution.

The June 2018 update for the Google Pixel 2 XL had reportedly slowed down the phone considerably according to users who took to internet forums to rant about it. Users reported that the Pixel would take a long time to wake up even after unlocking the phone using fingerprint. The bug was attributed to a new feature that rolled out with the update — Always-on display consistency. The feature allowed users to play around with how the always-on screen will look and more.

Soon enough, users took to Reddit and Google’s issue tracker to report that the Pixel 2 XL is waking up slower than usual after the update. There is a delay of several seconds between pressing the power button or authenticating with fingerprint and the device waking up. The issue seemed to be serious enough for Google to intervene and provide a temporary solution. Google’s TeamPixel community addressed the reports on community forums with the following message:

“We are aware that some Pixel 2 XL users are experiencing occasional delays with wake ups. We have now identified a fix which will be rolling out in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the problem can be worked around by setting the Ambient Display to “always on” on your Pixel 2 XL.”

By changing the Ambient Display option to ‘always on’, the issue seems to go away. Google also promised a permanent fix in a future update. It also seems that Google has stopped the rollout of the June 2018 update as the Pixel 2XL in our test lab has not received the update yet.

The issue at hand is not new. Reports of slow wake-up was reported back in December 2017 after the update to Android Oreo 8.1 was rolled out. It seems to have escalated to more users after the most recent update.

The Pixel 2 XL has been plagued by bugs and issues ever since its launch. It started with a faulty display calibration and reports of screen burn-in. Later, the phone was reported to be making high-pitched noises and clicking sounds while the top speaker was reported to be quieter than the bottom speaker.

Despite that, the phone is one of the most unique out there. Unique because it brings everything that Google is working on first to users. Secondly, it has a camera that is still unchallenged, especially in low-light situations. The Pixel 2 XL surely has a cult following (including this writer), but the plethora of bugs and issues are probably keeping the phone from going mainstream.
