Apple’s 2019 iPhone could feature triple-lens rear camera setup with 3D sensing capabilities: Report
HIGHLIGHTS

At least one of the iPhone releasing next year is said to come with three camera sensors on the rear, along with 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision for enhanced augmented reality applications.

Rumours of Apple’s upcoming iPhones have started coming in now. A new report by Economic Daily News, via MacRumours, cites a research note from Deutsche Securities analyst Jialin Lu saying that one of the iPhones releasing in 2019 might feature a triple-lens rear camera setup. As per Lu, the triple-camera setup will enable advanced 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision as two sensors are said to capture images of an object from slightly different angles. Then, in order to sense the distance between the iPhone and the object, a triangulation method will be used. This 3D sensing on the upcoming iPhone’s rear camera is said to be used primarily for augmented reality applications.

The new report also lines up with a previous Bloomberg report, which claimed that Apple is developing a rear-facing 3D sensor for the iPhone that will enable better-augmented reality applications. It was reported that Apple is considering adopting a 'time-of-flight' approach that relies on creating a 3D model by calculating the time taken for a laser to bounce off from surrounding objects. This is clearly different from how the TrueDepth sensor on the iPhone X projects 30,000 laser dots on a user's face for making a 3D mathematical model for authentication and Animojis.

Lu further speculates that the third lens on the iPhone will come with longer focal length for providing additional zoom capabilities. The long-focus lens is speculated to enable at least 3x optical zoom on an iPhone for the first time, as compared to the current 2x zoom capabilities on the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X models. With a 3x optical zoom, one can magnify the image in the device’s viewfinder by, obviously, three times without degrading the image quality as in like digital zoom.

There was also a previous report by Yuanta Securities analyst Jeff Pu, which was along the same lines. Pu said that one of the iPhones coming out next year will have a 6P lens design and could deliver up to 5X zoom. There might also be at least one 12MP lens within the setup and the report also says the same that the third lens could provide the 3X optical zoom. You can read more about it here.
