Snapdragon G2 and G1 will power basic gaming devices.

Qualcomm has pushed Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 Reference Design to OEMs to accelerate time to market.

Qualcomm has announced three new G series chips for handheld gaming devices across three tiers. These include Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, Snapdragon G1 Gen 1, and Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 all of which are powered by Qualcomm’s 8-core Kryo CPU.

“Dedicated handheld gaming devices are the best way to experience mobile games. But gamers want to be able to play all their favourite games across devices and ecosystems, be it their console, PC, or on a cloud service. The new generation of Snapdragon G Series powered devices will be the best place for gamers to play their favourite titles, offering them the ability to choose from the cloud, console, Android, or PC while on the go,” said Mithun Chandrasekhar, Qualcomm’s senior director of product management.

Snapdragon G3X Gen 2

The Snapdragon G3X Gen 2 leads the pack and is a sequel to the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 that powered Razer Edge, an Android-based handheld gaming console launched earlier this year. It integrates Adreno A32 GPU with ray tracing and FastConnect 7800.

The second-gen G3X promises 30% improvements in CPU performance and 2x improvement in GPU performance compared to the Gen 1 chip. It will support FHD+ devices with up to 144Hz refresh rate and dual cameras.

Qualcomm says that to accelerate the advent of high-end gaming devices, a gaming reference design powered by Snapdragon G3X is already available to selen OEMs and ODMs.
