Facebook starts rolling out shared photo albums
Now multiple users can post photos to a common album. Called shared photo albums, the new feature will be useful in group events on the network.
Facebook has started rolling out a new feature called ‘shared photo albums’, which allows users to upload photos from an event or of a common subject at a single platform on the network. The shared photo albums will be initially available for English-speaking users of the social network, but will be rolled out in other regions very soon.
The new feature allows access to as many as 50 “contributors”, who can share up to 200 photos each. Album creators have the options to invite others to the album or retain control over album invitations. Earlier, users could post photos to albums they had created, while each album was limited to 1,000 photos.
As explained by Mashable.com, users have three options for privacy settings – public, friends of contributors and contributors only. Bob Baldwin, software engineer at Facebook, told Mashable, the privacy setting allows album creator to have control over who can access to the group’s photos.
“Right now, if you were at a party and there were three different albums created, you might not be able to see all the photos [based on privacy settings], which is kind of confusing and frustrating,” Baldwin said.
Album creators will also have the option to modify or delete the pics in the album, but contributors will have editing power over photos that they upload.
The new feature is most likely to be useful for group events.
“I think one thing that’s really fun about creating products at Facebook is that you’re never quite sure how people will use the product one thing that’s really fun about creating products at Facebook is that you’re never quite sure how people will use the product in the end,” Baldwin said. “We’re really excited for launch because we think people will use [shared albums] in ways that we’re not even thinking of.”
The Next Web quotes Facebook as saying, “Hundreds of millions of photos are uploaded onto Facebook each day and today, we’re making it even easier for friends to share photos with the rollout of Shared Photo Albums. Whether you’re at a wedding, birthday party, or fresh off of a trip, all your friends will be able to add photos, tag photos and edit just one album.”
