Scammers in India are getting more and more advanced, and now they are behind your pension money. According to the recent warning from the authorities, the scammers are now posting fake pension card ads on social media which are hard to distinguish from the ones from official sources. The posts usually promise extra benefits and direct you to websites, forms or messaging accounts. Once there, you may be asked to share sensitive information such as your phone number, Aadhaar details, bank details or card information. In some cases, scammers may also ask for a registration fee. The government has recently warned the pensioners in the country about a new fake pension card scam via its official X account of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre. The authorities shared a post stating, ‘Fake pension benefits can look convincing.’ That’s exactly why they’re dangerous.’ Along with that, there was an image listing the benefits of the pension benefits card.

While the authorities have not officially explained how the scam works, experts say that it all starts with a social media advertisement related to the Pension Benefit Cards. The post shared contains familiar logos and official-looking language which can look genuine.
Once you click the link provided in that post, you’ll be redirected to a website, form or messaging account. Now, the fraudster may ask for your personal details like your phone number, Aadhaar details, bank information, card details or identity documents. Not only that but some may go ahead and also demand a registration or processing fee.

Fake pension card scam: How to stay safe
It’s very simple to stay safe against these fake pension card scams. Just make sure that you don’t click unknown links or download apps from a third-party website that looks shady. Never share any personal and financial information with an anonymous person, even OTPs. Visit the official website or dial the helpline number in case you wish to enquire about a scheme. Make sure you always check the ones that sound too good to be true. Don’t upload any identity proof, like Aadhar or other documents, on an unknown website.

If you have been duped already by sharing some information or losing money, you must act immediately. Give your bank a call in case your financial information has been compromised. You can also make a complaint using the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call 1930.
