You will soon be able to have naughty conversations with ChatGPT, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirms

OpenAI plans to introduce a significant change to ChatGPT: adult users will be able to engage in erotic conversations with the AI. This move aligns with the company’s “treat adult users like adults” principle, as announced by CEO Sam Altman on X (formerly Twitter). However, there’s a catch- users will have to verify their age to access this feature.

Previously, OpenAI imposed strict content restrictions on ChatGPT to safeguard users’ mental health. These limitations were focused on preventing the AI chatbot from engaging in sensitive topics like suicide and self-harm. Altman acknowledged that while these measures were necessary to address serious concerns, they also made the chatbot less enjoyable for users without such issues. He said, “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.”

With the implementation of improved tools to detect mental health issues, Altman believes that the company can now safely relax these restrictions. As part of this shift, the company plans to launch a new version of ChatGPT in the upcoming weeks. “In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing),” Altman stated.
