Google has launched a new app aimed at helping parents monitor their kids’ activities when using a smartphone. Called Family Link, the app lets parents create a Google Account for their kids and set ground rules for them. These include managing the apps used by the children, keeping an eye on the time the kids use the device as well as setting a bedtime on the phone.
In order to use the app, the parent will have to get a child a phone that runs Android Nougat, then download Family Link and create an account for the children through the app. Once this is done, the parent will be able to approve or block any app that the child wants to install. Further, parents will be able to see how much time their children spend on apps through weekly or monthly activity reports. If the parents want, they can regulate daily screen time or set a bedtime, afterwhich the device will be remotely locked.
The app is currently under testing, but parents in the US can request early access to the app. The company notes in its blog that the app is aimed at parents with children under 13 years of age. The app is currently only available for Android devices, buy be be available on iOS later.
