Twitter Unmentioning Feature Allows You To Untag Yourself From Tweets: How-To
HIGHLIGHTS

Twitter let you unmention yourself from conversations that you want to leave.

Twitter is rolling out the unmentioning feature for iOS, Android, Web, and Mac.

Here’s how to use the Twitter Unmentioning feature.

Musk or not, Twitter Inc is adding new features to the microblogging site. Well, they may not all be groundbreaking but can enhance the overall user experience. The titular one called ‘Unmentioning’ could be just that to excuse yourself from unsolicited mentions and conversations. We are surprised this wasn’t a Twitter feature till now. In any case, now that it’s here, let’s have a look at how to unmention on Twitter.

But shortly before that, let’s answer some of the questions you may have about the new Twitter rollout.

What is Twitter Unmentioning

Twitter introduced the feature like this:

It has been in testing since April 2022 and now it’s going live for all users.

How To Use Twitter Unmentioning

If you are mentioned in any Twitter conversation and you don’t want to be part of it, just tap on the 3-dot menu next to the tweet. This will show a prompt letting you “get you out of this conversation.” In other words, you are untagging yourself.

The Reason Behind Twitter Unmentioning

When the feature first showed up, Twitter remarked it is meant to “control unwanted attention.” It could prove to be an anti-abuse tool. But also, sometimes you just don’t want to be part of a conversation.

“Unmention yourself from this conversation” and that’s about it.

How Twitter Unmentioning Works

Once you unmention yourself, here’s what happens:

  • Untag your username: Your username will just remain as a text on the tweet, but you won’t be bothered by the conversation.
  • Stop future mentions: This prohibits people from mentioning you again in that conversation.
  • Stop notifications: You won’t get the notifications for the conversation but if you want, you can still read the conversation.
