Workday opens its platform to AI agents: Autopilot Agents and Headless Access explained

If you ask any person who has used payroll software on an enterprise level, what he or she does throughout the day, the answer will probably be the same. They click. Open a screen, check a field, approve a request, repeat. Workday Rising witnessed two more launches that promised to make the clicking unnecessary. The Autopilot Agents will do the job. With the help of the Trusted Agent Platform, clients can develop the agents which will perform the task. It poses a straightforward question. How much is the value of the HR and finance system without people clicking it?

Autopilot Agents do the background work

The new autopilot features from Workday mean that the agents can manage activities related to hiring, payroll, accounting, and compliance all together. They predict what requires attention, provide recommendations based on company policies, and operate in the framework of the specific customer’s policies. Sana – the Workday orchestration engine – manages them and calls for people when approval is needed.

A recruiter who has 25 open job positions would be followed by the Talent Acquisition Agent who will monitor the queue, find suitable candidates after the position is posted, and mark requisitions with the possibility of not being filled by the deadline. When the pipeline becomes too thin, it can alert the recruiter in Slack with draft communication messages.

=The Payroll Agent will look for missing pay information before running. The Accounting Agent will verify the transactions throughout the year, hence rendering an audit process to be an easier affair. The Deployment Agent will point out newly released features that can be switched on, and more than 5,000 customers have activated it since September.

This is key here. Only the autopilot capabilities of the Talent Acquisition Agent are currently available and for early adopters only, with general availability slated for early 2027. The Payroll, Accounting and Deployment Agents will be available to early adopters from early 2027.

What headless means

A headless platform allows data and business logic to be accessed independently of the interface. This means that the information and functionalities in Workday no longer require access to Workday’s user interface. This marks a major difference for the application which used screens as its product offering.

Clients have the capability to create, deploy and manage their own agents through the Trusted Agent Platform. The Agent Ready Tools, Agent Harness, Developer Agent, Custom Agents, and Data Cloud are all available to the client and can be used to enable any framework the client chooses. From preview to general availability, the process was quick. In June, Developer Agent and Agent Ready Tools were available to the early access program only.

One set of rules for every agent

All agents created by Workday, the customer, or any partner use the same Agent Harness to run on and have the same set of permissions, approvals, and audit trail. Each activity is recorded to indicate the activity carried out by the agent, the data used, and the approval obtained for the activity.

The builders have options. The Developer Agent creates an agent from plain language instructions using models from Codex and Cursor. The Custom Agents are designed to work on LangChain and NVIDIA Nemotron, which are now Generally Available, while the support for Google ADK is currently working with design partners.

The questions still open

As is always the case, there is no guarantee that the features may not change or be released at all. Agent Context Service is set for release in early access late in the year while Grounded Reasoning, which will prevent an agent from undertaking out-of-policy actions, will follow suit in early 2027. The logs will provide records of approvals but neither release mentions anything about liability in case an agent makes errors with payroll within its parameters.

The other open question is India. Indian GCCs and IT service providers maintain large HR and financial back offices. It is something worth asking Workday when the Payroll Agent’s autopilot reaches maturity.
