Apple has announced a major leadership change as Jeff Williams, the company’s chief operating officer (COO), prepares to leave the company later this year. Williams will hand over the role of COO to Sabih Khan, Apple’s current senior vice president of Operations, later this month. Even after stepping down as COO, Williams will continue to work closely with Apple CEO Tim Cook for the rest of the year. He will oversee Apple’s design team and Apple Watch, as well as the company’s Health initiatives. However, once he retires, Apple’s design team will begin reporting directly to Cook.
Survey“Jeff and I have worked alongside each other for as long as I can remember, and Apple wouldn’t be what it is without him,” said Cook. “He’s helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple’s health strategy; and led our world-class team of designers with great wisdom, heart, and dedication.”

Williams has spent 27 years at Apple and a total of 40 years in the industry. He played a key role in launching the iPod, iPhone, and Apple Watch. He also helped shape Apple’s health efforts, bringing tools that help users learn more about their health and get life-saving support.
Talking about his future, Williams said, “June marked my 27th anniversary with Apple, and my 40th in the industry. Beginning next year, I plan to spend more time with friends and family, including five grandchildren and counting.”

Taking over as COO is Sabih Khan, who has been with Apple for 30 years. He has been in charge of Apple’s global supply chain for the past six years, managing everything from product quality and planning to procurement, manufacturing, logistics and fulfillment.
“Sabih is a brilliant strategist… he has helped pioneer new technologies in advanced manufacturing… and helped ensure that Apple can be nimble in response to global challenges,” Cook said. “Above all, Sabih leads with his heart and his values, and I know he will make an exceptional chief operating officer.”
