Smartphone users prefer websites over apps for m-shopping: Study
HIGHLIGHTS

The study says about 25% of smartphone users in country prefer to shop on websites than use shopping apps

Majority of smartphone users prefer websites for online shopping than the shopping apps on the smartphone, reveals a study by research firm Nielsen.

About 25 percent of smartphone users in India prefer shopping on the websites instead shopping apps. “When it comes to accessing content on the smartphone, there has been an increasing preference for apps over websites. However, in the shopping genre, the smartphone audience still prefers websites,” the study said.

“Shopping apps are still in a very nascent stage with just 3 per cent of smartphone users accessing them. On the other hand, 1 in 4 (25 per cent) smartphone users access shopping websites at least once a month, clearly indicating a preference for the website platform,” it added.

The study further reveals a ‘greater percentage’ of smartphone users aged above 40 years visit shopping properties at least once a month. The study also observed more smartphone-users aged between 25 and 35 years engaged in m-commerce. 8 per cent of them said they used devices for shipping.

Flipkart has emerged as the most popular online shopping site, having a reach of 5 percent. Ebay is at the second position with 4 percent reach. In terms of shopping apps, eBay has the highest penetration with 1 percent of smartphone users using the app at least once a month. Flipkart comes second with penetration below 1 percent.

The data has been derived from the responses given by more than 10,000 smartphone users in a survey conducted by Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights in October 2012.
