The viral message claims that your license will be cancelled or suspended if you don’t update your mobile number. However, before you believe the viral post, it is important to check what the government rules actually say about the same. Here is everything you need to know about what happens when your mobile number is not linked to your driving license.

According to a viral message circulating on social media, driving license holders must update their mobile numbers before September 25 or risk having their licenses suspended or cancelled.
Some versions of the message mention September 26 as the deadline while making the same claim.
Reports also suggest that some messages take things a step further, as they also warn the motorist that failing to update the mobile number could affect the validity of a driving license.
The claim has caused confusion because the government does advise driving license holders and vehicle owners to keep their contact details updated. However, no deadline has been set for the process.

What do the rules say about the September 25 deadline?
The government and concerned authorities advised driving license holders and registered vehicle owners to update their mobile numbers in the Sarathi and Vahan databases at regular intervals. However, there is no confirmed nationwide rule stating that a driving license will automatically be cancelled or suspended if the mobile number is not updated by September 25.

How to link your mobile number to your driving license online
If you haven’t linked your mobile number to your driving license yet, you can head to the official Sarthi Parhivan portal website. Now, you’ve to select your state, enter your driving license number, date of birth, and the captcha code shown on screen, and click Submit.
Select ‘Aadhaar Authentication’ and provide your Aadhaar Number. Provide the One-Time Password (OTP) generated at the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. On successful verification, check your details displayed on the screen and click on Proceed.
Provide your new mobile number and verify it through the OTP generated on that number. The process ends with submitting your request. Do note that the process is free and can be done online.
