Google may soon let you send SOS alerts without touching your smartphone, here is how

Search giant Google makes headlines regularly for introducing new features and enhancements across its product line. In a recent move, the company is reportedly developing a feature that lets you share Emergency SOS alerts with your configured contacts using your voice. Traditionally, Emergency SOS is triggered using a 5-time physical press on the power button.

According to an Android Authority report, the company could be preparing a voice-based safety alerts system to send an SOS alert and call people who respond first in the situation without physically pressing buttons. While the feature is not available for users, it was spotted in the Personal Safety app’s “2026.09.16.982745548” build version, the report noted.

As per the strings, users may get the option to add a “hands-free” method to send an SOS alert. Besides the code strings, an animation also cements the possibility of the arrival of the feature soon. It could show features like location check, emergency calling and video recording, among others.

Personal Safety’s ‘hands-free’ feature: How it may work?

The feature is expected to get activated when a person says “Help” three times in a row. The previously talked-about animation could show up during the setup. Further, users may get the option to dismiss sending the alert by saying “cancel” and say “yes” to continue sending it. This confirmation could also restrict the functionality to trigger the feature, the news outlet noted.

According to the report, the feature could arrive on Android phones of different manufacturers, with Samsung being an exception since it uses a custom SOS facility. However, do note that there is no official word about the upcoming feature from Google. So there is also a possibility that the company might edit its actual functionality when it releases or scrap the feature altogether even before a rollout.

Lastly, readers should note the leaks are based on an APK teardown, which includes strings of experimental code. These may get edited before a release or completely vanish in upcoming updates. Meanwhile, Google’s Personal Safety also manages Fall Detection and Crash Detection and sends alerts on extreme weather to users.
