WhatsApp finally rolling out usernames for users: Here is how it works and how to use it

WhatsApp users now have a new way to connect as the Meta-owned platform rolls out its much-awaited username feature. It’s available on both iOS and Android and allows users to search, chat, and make voice or video calls without sharing their phone numbers. Moreover, it also offers users a more private and flexible communication experience, especially when interacting with new contacts or businesses. Users can expect greater control over their personal information and improved privacy in WhatsApp once they receive the new update.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the function is being offered at present to only a few individuals who have downloaded the newest WhatsApp update. There are plans by the firm to expand the use of the function incrementally in order to maintain stability during usage.

Note: The feature is still in its early phase, and not everyone will see it immediately. WhatsApp plans to expand availability in the coming weeks as it continues testing.

WhatsApp username rules and requirements

WhatsApp has made clear rules about how usernames should be created. Here’s everything you need to know:

• Your username must have at least one letter. You can only use small letters (a–z), numbers, dots (.), and underscores (_).
• It should be between 3 and 35 characters long.
• You can’t start it with ‘www.’ or end it with things like ‘.com’ or ‘.net’.

WhatsApp username linking

You can only claim a username on WhatsApp provided it’s available on Meta sites. When the username you have picked has been taken by someone else on either Instagram or Facebook, and you are not the owner, then you must come up with another one. However, if you own it, then you should confirm your ownership using the Accounts Center.

When you choose a username on WhatsApp, you need to link your accounts and confirm your identity. Also, remember that using the same username on different platforms can make it easier for others to find and connect your accounts.

How to add your username on WhatsApp

Follow the steps below to claim a username on your WhatsApp:

1. Launch WhatsApp on your smartphone, either an Android or an iPhone.

2. Head to Settings:

• For Android: Press the three-dot icon on the top right-hand side of the screen and click Settings.
• For iOS: Tap on your profile photo to access the You tab.

3. Tap on your name at the top of the screen.

4. Look for the Username tab.

5. Type in your preferred username and click Submit.

Extra privacy with username key

WhatsApp didn’t just stop here, as the Meta-owned platform is also providing an optional username key for added security. It consists of four digits, which the user is free to choose so that they can regulate who gets access to sending them messages initially.

If you’ve enabled the username key, then only those individuals who know your username and key will be able to communicate with you over WhatsApp.
