Claude Code permanent memory unlock: This free tool tells you how

46,000 GitHub stars in 48 hours. That is no small feat especially considering that the tool is not a viral AI wrapper or another ChatGPT skin. It is a tool that does exactly one thing, stops Claude Code from forgetting how you code.

The stars are important because a developer will only likely give a star on GitHub if it actually solves something for them.  And agentmemory is solving pain that anyone who has spent serious time with Claude Code knows really well. Once the session ends, the context dies, and it’s like Claude never knew you the very next day. You have to start from scratch and explain the architecture, your preferences and even fix bugs you had already fixed all over again.

Agentmemory gets rid of that loop. All you have to do to install it is run one command, npx @agentmemory/agentmemory, and it wires itself into Claude Code’s hook system. Now, everything you do from file edits to testruns, it is all recorded by agentmemory and for every new session, it feeds that context back to the agent so you don’t have to go through it all again.

It also helps you out a lot when with efficiency because this drops your token consumption by around 95% than if you were to manually provide context each time. For anyone who uses Claude Code, this makes managing the context window a whole lot simpler.

The retrieval is also smart. It runs three search streams at once – keyword matching, vector embeddings, and a knowledge graph. Then it combines the results. So if you search “database performance,” it will pop up the N+1 fix you might have made a while back. Memories also version and supersede each other automatically, so stale facts do not keep popping in your future sessions.

It works in other platforms as well such as Cursor, Windsurf, and Codex. Custom agent frameworks get a 106-endpoint REST API. The biggest plus for this is that it all runs locally with no external database. Context files like CLAUDE.md were merely just a workaround, never a proper solution. This, on the other hand, is proper memory and seems like 46,000 developers agree.
