Havells Aquas Pro 3X review: Does a water purifier really need no filter change for 3 years?

Water purifiers have become much better over the years, but there is one problem that still annoys almost every RO owner: maintenance. You buy a purifier, install it at home, and then, sooner or later, you have to replace filters, call a technician, and spend more money. Havells is trying to fix exactly this problem with the Aquas Pro 3X.

The big headline is its 3X filter-life claim. Havells says the purifier’s core cartridges are designed to provide safe drinking water for 3 years or 15,000 litres, whichever comes first. But there is quite a bit of fine print behind that claim, so let’s look at what you actually get.

Design and usability

The Havells Aquas Pro 3X has a compact, wall-mounted design with a dual-tone finish and a functional display panel. The manual specifies wall-mount installation, with the purifier secured using mounting screws and wall inserts. Water is dispensed through a manual push-pull lever tap on the front, while the purifier uses a 7-litre storage tank. Havells also provides a tank cover designed to protect the stored water from external dust and insects.

Multi-step purification

The Aquas Pro 3X uses 100% RO + UV purification and has a seven-stage purification system. It uses a thin-film composite RO membrane and a 4W UV chamber. The purifier also uses a Bacteriostatic Taste Enhancer cartridge that combines copper and zinc with a taste-enhancement function.

The purifier has a 7-litre storage tank. Its published specifications list a purification flow rate of up to approximately 25 litres per hour. To see how this holds up in the real world, I tested the output at my home. In exactly one hour, the system took in 50 litres of input water, successfully purifying 24 litres while rejecting 26 litres. This real-world result of 24 litres per hour is incredibly close to the brand’s official claim and represents a solid 48% water recovery rate.

The RO system is designed to reduce dissolved solids while the UV stage provides additional disinfection. Havells specifies a TDS reduction of at least 90% and a system disinfection efficiency of 6, 4 and 3 log reduction for bacteria, viruses and cysts, respectively.

Testing water quality conditions

This is probably the most important section if you’re considering the Aquas Pro 3X. Havells’ three-year filter-life claim was tested under specific standard conditions, including water with up to 1,000 ppm TDS, an operating pressure of 1.0 kg/cm2, maximum turbidity of 1 NTU, temperature of 25°C, chlorine below 0.2 mg/L, iron below 0.1 mg/L, and a membrane pressure of 80 psi.

Havells explicitly states that results may differ depending on input-water quality and product operating conditions. The purifier’s recommended feed-water specifications allow TDS up to 1,500 ppm. I put this to the test with my local tap water, which measured a very high input TDS of 1445 ppm. The Aquas Pro 3X performed exceptionally well, bringing the water down to a highly drinkable 54 ppm. This massive drop easily clears the manual’s promise of at least a 90% TDS reduction.

However, that 1,500 ppm maximum allowance should not be confused with the conditions under which the three-year filter-life claim was validated. The 3X filter-life warranty specifically states that it is only valid for input TDS of up to 1,000 ppm.

This is particularly relevant if you use borewell water or have poor-quality incoming water. In those situations, filter life can vary. Havells also specifies an input pressure range of 6 to 30 psi. If pressure is below 6 psi, a booster pump may be required; if it exceeds 30 psi, a pressure-reducing valve may be required. Additional charges can apply for these requirements.

Decoding Havells’ filter claim

This is the biggest reason to consider the Aquas Pro 3X. According to Havells’ official manual, the Inner Sediment Filter, Activated Carbon Filter and RO membrane are covered for three years, with a one-time replacement in case of filter failure. The coverage is applicable for input water up to 1,000 ppm TDS.

However, there is an important distinction. The purifier’s core cartridges are designed to provide safe drinking water for three years or 15,000 litres, whichever comes first. So this is not an unlimited three-year guarantee irrespective of how much water you purify. However, 15,000 litres of water is a substantial capacity. To put this in context, a family of four drinks around 10 to 13 litres of water every day. Over three years, this amounts to roughly 14,500 litres. With this consumption pattern, the three-year claim holds up perfectly.

There are other consumables that do not have the same three-year life. The pre-filter needs replacement after one year or 6,000 litres, whichever comes first. The Bacteriostatic Taste Enhancer cartridge also has a replacement interval of one year or 6,000 litres. The 4W UV lamp has a stated life of 5,000 burning hours under standard conditions.

So, the accurate way to describe the product is not by putting on a sticker that says ‘No service needed for 3 years*’. A better description is that Havells claims a three-year or 15,000-litre life for the core sediment, activated-carbon, and RO components, while some other consumables have shorter replacement intervals. That distinction matters. But I suppose that is just too long to print on a sticker.

Understanding warranty details

This is another area where marketing can easily be misunderstood. The Aquas Pro 3X does not have a blanket three-year warranty covering the entire purifier.

Havells’ standard warranty covers the purifier’s electrical and functional parts for one year from the date of purchase. Consumables such as the pre-filter and Bacteriostatic Taste Enhancer are not covered under that standard warranty. The special 3X filter-life coverage applies specifically to the Inner Sediment Filter, Activated Carbon Filter and RO membrane, for three years, with one-time replacement in case of filter failure.

Havells also says it provides two preventive-maintenance checkups during the first year, while service visits during the second and third years are provided on a need basis at no cost, provided the customer registers a service request with Havells. So while the purifier is marketed around “no service for three years,” that shouldn’t be interpreted as meaning that absolutely nothing can require attention during those three years.

Should you buy Havells Aquas Pro 3X?

The Havells Aquas Pro 3X is an interesting approach to one of the biggest problems with RO purifiers: recurring maintenance. Its 3-year or 15,000-litre core-filter-life claim is genuine and is backed by specific warranty terms. But it is not the same thing as saying that every filter and consumable inside the purifier will last three years.

The Inner Sediment Filter, Activated Carbon Filter and RO membrane get the three-year or 15,000-litre treatment, while the pre-filter and Bacteriostatic Taste Enhancer are one-year or 6,000-litre consumables.

So, should you buy it? If your priority is reducing the frequency and hassle of replacing the main RO filtration components, the Aquas Pro 3X makes a strong case. But don’t buy it because the box says ‘3 years’ and assume you’re completely done with maintenance for three years. The reality is more nuanced, and honestly, that’s what makes this purifier interesting enough to review.
