Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel to increase tariffs in few weeks
HIGHLIGHTS

Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel will soon increase tariffs.

The telcos have not revealed how the tariff increase will affect their consumers.

This news comes soon after Vodafone Idea and Airtel reported combined losses of over Rs 80,000 crores.

Update: We originally published this story stating that Vodafone-Idea and Airtel have announced increasing tariffs for their consumers. However, later in the day, Jio also announced the same and said that it will hike prices in the next few weeks. We have updated the article with this new development.

The telecom industry is as competitive as ever and the three leading telecom operators, Vodafone-Idea, Airtel and Reliance Jio have announced that they are hiking tariff charges. Both Airtel and Vodafone announced this first and Jio soon followed suit. The three telcos have not yet revealed how the tariff hike will be implement and thus, we currently don't know how it will affect the consumers.

Jio says, "We will also work with the Government and comply with the regulatory regime to strengthen the industry to benefit Indian consumers and take measures including appropriate increase in tariffs in next few weeks in a manner that does not adversely impact data consumption or growth in digital adoption and sustains investments."

In a separate media statement, both Vodafone-Idea and Airtel have announced that their tariffs will increase from December 1, 2019. Vodafone says that the mobile data charges in India are the cheapest in the world, even when data consumption and demand is going up. “To ensure that its customers continue to enjoy world-class digital experiences, Vodafone Idea will suitably increase the prices of its tariffs effective 1 December 2019,” Vodafone said in a statement.

Similarly, Airtel mentioned how the telecom sector requires intensive continuous investments to keep up with fast-changing tech. “It is, therefore, extremely important that the industry remains viable to support the vision of Digital India. Accordingly, Airtel will appropriately increase price offerings in the month beginning December,” Airtel’s statement reads.

Both the telcos have not yet revealed where the increased tariffs will be implemented and how it will affect their consumers. Prices of prepaid and postpaid recharge options can be expected to increase, but nothing is currently confirmed.
