Xiaomi President Lin Bin shows Mi Mix 3 running on 5G network
HIGHLIGHTS

5G is the next big bet for the entire telecom industry, with chip-makers making a big push for creating 5G radios and smartphone manufacturers promising 5G enabled handsets by 2019, including Xiaomi

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 was launched earlier this year and the smartphone was packed to the brim with exciting features. The smartphone sported some very unique design choices as always but also packed the very best of Qualcomm’s mobile system on a chip. During the launch of the Mi Mix 3, Xiaomi had confirmed that a 5G variant of the phone would launch for the European market in 2019, and it appears that Xiaomi is going to make good on that promise.

Xiaomi President Lei Jun shared an image on Weibo of a Mi Mix 3, but with some very interesting information. On the top bar, a faint 5G symbol can be seen (top right) along with a ‘P’ logo on the top left. This could very well be the 5G enabled Mi Mix 3 the company spoke about during the launch. It also points to the possibility that the 5G enabled Mi Mix 3 might come with Android P out of the box. Besides the content of the photo, there’s no other detail about the Mi Mix 3.

It would be safe to assume that the 5G ready version of the Mi Mix 3 would sport the same internals as the existing version. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 is not yet 5G compatible, so it is possible that the Mi Mix 3 shown in the photo is running on the next Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 855 which is expected to be 5G ready. If Xiaomi does launch the Mi Mix 3 in a 5G flavour we don’t expect much of the design to change from the existing one.

Many manufacturers are now moving towards a 5G world with the entire telecommunications industry betting big on the technology. Both Intel and Qualcomm are readying their 5G radios alongside Samsung and Huawei. The question at the moment is not necessarily who will be the first 5G smartphone to market, but whether 5G will be ready for mass deployment by 2019 and whether it will fulfil all the functionality we have seen demos of time and time again.
