Samsung to unveil its Smartwatch on September 4
HIGHLIGHTS

We've long heard rumours that the big tech giants were working on a smartwatch, but it seems that Samsung is almost ready to pull the wraps off its creation. Perhaps.

It’s no surprise that Samsung has been working on a Smartwatch of sorts, and now, VentureBeat is reporting that they’ve managed to get a first look at a prototype of the Smartwatch, thanks to a source.

VentureBeat has said that it wasn’t allowed to take any photos or videos of the watch, but nonetheless reported that it sports a screen measuring 3 inches diagonally. It has thick bezels and comes in shades of black and grey (though this could change). The watch will connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, but in the event that the phone is not available, the watch has a built-in Wi-Fi radio to keep its internet activities going. It has a 4-megapixel camera built into the strap, and tiny speakers in the clasp.

From what it looks like, the Smartwatch isn’t an independent device in of itself to a large extent. It can still function without being paired to a phone, but since it lacks a cellular chip, you can’t make calls or send/receive text messages from it. It would seem that the watch is loaded with health-related apps and sensors, acting as a way of keeping track of your health related activities. The watch will track your workouts, your jogs and runs etc to monitor just how much calories you’re shedding after that binge eating session.

While the Smartwatch is rumoured to be unveiled on the 4th of September, we’re not convinced of the entire purpose of the watch. Is it a companion to your phone? If so, isn’t 3 inches too big for the wrist? It’s clearly not going to replace your phone. God forbid you need to type up a word document on the go and all you have is this watch and its luscious 3-inches of real estate. Good luck hitting the italics button there. While we do have our reservations, we’d like to keep an open mind and hope that Samsung can demonstrate a real reason as to why a Smartwatch makes sense. Here’s to waiting for 2 more days.
