OnePlus OxygenOS could be revamped thanks to winning entry of OnePlus Product Manager Challenge
HIGHLIGHTS

OnePlus has selected Leandro Tijink as the winner of its Product Manager Challenge, whose entry showcases a revamped design for OxygenOS.

Highlights:

  • OnePlus announces the winner of its Product Manager Challenge.
  • Léandro Tijink’s entry showcases a reworked OxygenOS.
  • OnePlus says it will work hard to make the winning entry a reality for its community.

OnePlus previously announced a Product Manager Challenge wherein it asked users to submit new features, which they would like to see implemented on OxygenOS. The challenge has now concluded and OnePlus has picked Léandro Tijink as the winner, whose entry is quite detailed and it showcases numerous features that could be implemented on a future version of OxygenOS. Tijink has made a number of changes to the UX and UI of the OxygenOS with “a consistent, fluid and burdenless experience that makes the user feel in control, while being focused on the things that actually matter”.

Explaining his design, the winner says that the experience across the entire OxygenOS will be consistent with congruous color-usage, corner-radii, font sizes, and more. This is reflected in many of the submitted designs but a good example of it would be the revamped setup menu. As one would observe in the images below, there are some subtle design changes like consistent rounded corners with a cleaner overall layout. The new UI shows a better setup screen that is more consistent and improved. Personalisation and customisation being an important aspect of Android OS, the upcoming OxygenOS might pick up the user’s suggestion to include screen calibration option, picking an accent for the interface and more options like Face Unlock, Wi-Fi directly with the setup.

There are also improvements to the ambient display, which one might argue is quite good as it is. However, Tijink’s design suggests that at one glance, the screen should display only the time and date, along with app logos for received notification. Tapping the display would show more information. The lock screen is also showcased, but with no radical changes. The notifications now feature rounded edges and the logo for accessing the camera or the voice assistant are slightly reworked.

The OnePlus launcher can also be expected to get a revamp. Tijink has revamped the OnePlus Shelf, which is replaced by the Google Feed in most other phones, to be more compact in terms of design and in-line with the overall design with rounded corners. Other changes to the launcher includes a similar UI and UX for the recents menu, app drawer and the hidden space drawer. Similar design changes can be observed in the SMS app, Gallery, Calculator, the OnePlus Switch app, among others.

OnePlus says, “The feature our team voted on was a true stand out. The carefully laid out product requirements document got our attention, but it was the similarity with our own philosophy, of making small but meaningful tweaks that combine into a great user experience, that won us over: Congratulations, @Its.Leandroo! Your detailed entry is not only quite thoughtful and creative, but also a great reminder that we should constantly keep a focus on polishing the OxygenOS experience.”

OnePlus did confirm it will be working in the coming months to “make this idea a reality for our community”. This is no confirmation that all of the depicted designs will be integrated but some of them might just end up making their way into the upcoming OxygenOS.
