Motorola working on 2016 edition of Moto X?
HIGHLIGHTS

The Moto X line of smartphones has been much loved over time, and a 2016 edition may just be on the way.

The Moto X lineup of smartphone led in terms of Moto’s flagships till 2015, replaced by the wonderful Moto Z this year. However, Moto has since suggested that the Moto X lineup is not over, and a recently leaked image seems to point at a 2016 edition of the Moto X presently in the works. In a photograph posted on Weibo, the device is probably only a prototype right now, but bears a similar look to the Moto Z smartphones.

The only thing we can figure from the photograph are Moto’s signature design language, and a fingerprint sensor embedded on the Home button, just like the Moto Z. There is also a Moto logo to the top left of the display, although we suspect that is only a sticker. Unfortunately, no further details were revealed along with the photograph.

Techdroider speculates that the phone is not the Moto Z, but a prototype of the Moto M Plus, to be unveiled in November 2016 alongside the Moto M. The leaks state that it may include a 6-inch display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, as opposed to the 5.5-inch display and MediaTek processor configuration of the rumoured Moto M. The company has not given away any hint or teaser of either of the devices yet, but most seem to believe that it is the 2016 Moto X, and not a Plus variant of the mid-range Moto M.

Moto unveiled three variants of the Moto X in India in 2015. The Moto X Play was aimed at the mid-range segment, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC, 2GB RAM and a 5.5-inch Full HD display. The Moto X Style, meanwhile, was launched as an interim flagship, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, 3GB RAM and a 5.7-inch 2K resolution display. All of this was eventually topped by the Moto X Force that also premiered the Moto ShatterShield display technology. The smartphone was powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, along with 3GB RAM and a 5.4-inch 2K resolution display.

The Moto Z Play is the present generation mid-range smartphone, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, 3GB RAM and a 5.5-inch Full HD display. With that in place, it remains to be seen how Moto places a new Moto X smartphone in its product portfolio. It already has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617-powered Moto G4 Plus in its lineup, so we may see the new Moto X being powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650/652 SoC.

Either way, we cannot wait to welcome the much loved Moto X lineup back in action.
