The chipset may be suffering from heating issues after initially facing problems with the Wi-Fi dropping at random intervals
The MediaTek Helio X20 may be suffering from heating issues, as per Chinese website, Anzhuo. The deca-core chipset was unveiled in May last year and apparently the company has been facing problems during its development. According to the report, the heating issue with the chipset has become reach a point where many of the manufactured who were planning to use the chipset in their devices have backed off.
In addition, Anzhuo’s report says that MediaTek was initially facing trouble with the chipset’s Wi-Fi capabilities, which was dropping at random intervals. When this issue was fixed, the overheating issues cropped up. It is unclear if this will postpone the production of the Helio X20 any further or the will company proceed as planned.
The MediaTek Helio X20 has been speculated to feature in a number of smartphones. It was earlier thought that the chipset would be featured in the Xiaomi Mi 5. However, it was later revealed that the phone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC instead. A recent report suggests that HTC’s upcoming flagship phone, the One M10, might be launched in two variants. One may be powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC, while the other may be powered by a MediaTek processor, which may be a Helio X20 processor.
Back in October last year, it was reported that Qualcomm was also facing heating issues with its Snapdragon 820 processor. Rumours suggested that Samsung’s engineers were trying to resolve the heating issues by modifying the microprocessor control program. The engineers were also ready to resort to heat radiating pipes if that didn’t work. However, Qualcomm had refuted these reports and said that the chipset meets the company’s design specifications and would continue to be improved. The company’s previous flagship, the Snapdragon 810, was infamous for its heating issues. Most companies who planned on using the chipset had to find a workaround for the heat it generated. For instance, the OnePlus 2 used an improved version of the SoC called Snapdragon 810 v2.1. This version of the chipset comes with a thermal gel and graphite layered over the cores. In addition, the OnePlus 2 also comes with software tunings to ensure that the processor doesn’t generate too much heat as a result of being overworked.
