It’s a tech developed in-house by LG which makes use of the display to act as a diaphragm so that vibrations from the surface can produce sound.

Highlights:

  • LG plans to use the OLED display as a vibrating diaphragm for clearer sound.
  • The tech has been used in LG TVs before.
  • LG also plans to retain the Quad DAC and Boombox speaker.

LG is all set to launch the LG G8 ThinQ at MWC 2019 on February 24. The Korean tech giant has been revealing certain exciting aspects of the phone to tease the launch. The LG G8 ThinQ is officially confirmed to come with a ToF sensor on the front for better selfies. Now, LG has revealed that the OLED panel used on the LG G8 does something special.

The OLED panel on the LG G8 is called a Crystal Sound OLED (CSO). It’s a tech developed in-house by LG which makes use of the display to act as a diaphragm so that vibrations from the surface can produce sound. This, LG believes, improves clarity and makes voices “easier to discern”. The LG G8 will route the bass through a separate speaker on the bottom and with CSO, you get another channel for sound output. The tech isn’t necessarily new as LG has been using CSO in its OLED TVs for quite some time now.

This also confirms that the LG G8 will not come with an LCD display, as has been the case previously with the G-series. Furthermore, LG also confirmed that the LG G8 ThinQ will retain the HiFi Quad DAC and the boombox speaker, both of which were there on the LG G7 ThinQ launched last year. The presence of a Quad DAC also confirms the phone will come with a 3.5mm headphone jack. An earlier report claimed the phone will be priced $900 in some markets, making it quite expensive even for an Android flagship.

The LG G8 is rumoured to be powered by the Snapdragon 855 and based on leaked renders, the phone will stick to a dual-camera setup on the back. The phone will be announced on February 24th, a day before MWC formally kicks off. It’s unclear at this point whether LG will stream the event live for all to watch. Nevertheless, Digit will be there at the event to bring you all the deets about the upcoming flagship.
