When did 6GB RAM smartphones go out of style?

LeEco’s flagship smartphone, the Le Max2, may sport an impressive 6GB of RAM, but even that may not be enough for the company, if rumours are to be believed. According to a report by GizChina, the company is planning to launch a new flagship smartphone that will be equipped with a staggering 8GB of RAM. The smartphone is also tipped to be powered by Snapdragon 821 (earlier known as Snapdragon 823) processor, which is speculated to be a higher clocked variant of the Snapdragon 820. The report adds that the device may sport a 25MP rear camera, and be priced at CNY 3,000 (approx. Rs. 30,600).

However, if LeEco does launch a phone with 8GB of RAM, it might have some competition from Samsung. The company's upcoming smartphone, the Galaxy Note 6 (or Galaxy Note 7) is also tipped to be powered by the Snapdragon 821 chipset, and offer up to 8GB of RAM. However, it is highly unlikely that Samsung will price its upcoming flagship as competitively as LeEco.

Besides LeEco, some of the other brands that offer smartphones with 6GB of RAM are Vivo, Zuk and OnePlus. This comes at a time when flagships from other major manufacturers like Samsung, LG and HTC sport 4GB of RAM. This, in turn, raises a question on whether we really need our smartphones to offer such large amounts of RAM. Or, is 8GB simply overkill?
