Asus could be working on a cheaper ROG phone, TENAA listing suggests
The smartphone in question has lower memory and a single 12MP camera on the back, but it has a similar design like the ROG phone, suggesting a cheaper variant of it.
The ROG phone by Asus is yet to go on sale globally and in India, but rumour has it that Asus is already working on a cheaper version of the gaming smartphone. A new Asus phone was spotted on TENAA, China’s communications commission website TENAA. Based on the photos, the phone looks quite a lot like the ROG phone (first impressions).
The smartphone has the model number Z01QD. Once again, this is identical to the ROG phone’s model number which was ZS600KL. But even though the phone looks similar to the gaming phone, it’s specifications are different. The phone in question is said to offer 8GB, 6GB and 4GB of RAM along with packing just a single 12MP camera on the back. This indicates the phone could be priced lower than the ROG phone.
The original ROG phone that launched at Computex 2018 in Taipei is gaming phone packed to the brim with features. It has a unique ROG design with a toughened glass exterior and lots of gaming-centric design choices. That includes a retroactive cooler that uses vapour chamber cooling to eke out more from the chipset. The Snapdragon 845 SoC in the phone itself is an overclocked variant of the original that goes up to 2.9GHz. That is coupled with 8GB of RAM and a whopping 512GB of storage. There’s an AMOLED panel with a 1ms response time and is HDR enabled.
Asus CEO Jerry Shen had told Digit that the ROG phone will launch in India in September. However, the downgraded gaming phone spotted online has no release date so far. Considering the ROG phone has top-of-the-line hardware, pricing it competitively could be problem for the Taiwanese tech giant. Perhaps to capture more of the emerging smartphone gaming market, a cheaper version of the phone is on the works.Whether this phone will also support the same accessories remains to be seen.
