Googles latest mobile OS is available on the Pixel phone and the Essential phone as of now. Other OEMs are expected to roll out the OS to their devices soon.

Android distribution numbers for August have been released by Google. The data shows that the latest version of Android, Android 9 Pie is running on less than 0.1 percent devices. Android 9 was launched to the public recently and the OS is available only on the Pixel phones and the Essential phone as of now. Other OEMs are yet to roll out the Android Pie update to compatible devices. We recently saw the announcement of the Sony Xperia XZ3 smartphone running on Android 9 out of the box, but the smartphone doesn’t ship till later this year.

Moving on to Android 8 and 8.1 Oreo, the OS has seen an increased share reaching 14.6 percent of Android devices. In July, Android 8 was running on 12.1 percent of Android phones. Older Android operating systems have a larger presence on devices. Android 7.0 and 7.1 Nougat have a 30.8 percent market share between the two versions.

Coming to the older operating systems, Android 6.0 Marshmallow has the second largest share after Android 7 Nougat standing at 22.7 percent. The share is down from 23.5 percent in July. Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop stand at 19.2 percent whereas Android 4.4 KitKat is at 8.6 percent.

A surprise is that the share of Android 2.3 Gingerbread has risen from 0.2 percent in July to 0.3 percent. You can check out the official Android chart from Google here
