What is e-Shram platform and why govt wants Swiggy, Zomato and others to register on the platform

The government has directed digital aggregators to complete the onboarding of gig and platform workers on the e-Shram portal. The new platform is developed to build a comprehensive database of the unorganised workforce. The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment said major platforms such as Zomato, Blinkit, Swiggy, Uber, Ola, Rapido, Amazon, Zepto, Urban Company and Porter have already integrated with the system. Other aggregators have been asked to comply by June 21. The e-Shram portal serves as a national registry for unorganised workers, including delivery personnel, drivers and freelancers. The initiative supports the implementation of the Code on Social Security, 2020, aimed at extending welfare benefits and improving worker coverage.

What is e-Shram portal

The e-Shram portal is a national database created for workers in the unorganised sector. It helps the government maintain records of workers and extend social welfare benefits to them. Gig workers, delivery partners, drivers, freelancers and other platform-based workers can register on the portal and receive a unique identification number. The database is expected to help authorities design and deliver welfare schemes more effectively.

What did the government say?

The Labour Ministry said that 15 aggregators have already been onboarded on the e-Shram portal and directed all remaining platforms to complete the process by June 21. It also asked aggregators to integrate their systems through APIs so worker information can be shared with the portal in a structured manner.

According to the ministry, the onboarding process is linked to the implementation of the Code on Social Security, 2020. The law recognises gig and platform workers and provides a framework for extending social security benefits to them. The ministry has warned that non-compliance could attract action under the provisions of the Code.
