Thousands of Claude chats are showing up in Google Search: Here’s how to protect your privacy

Claude is one of the most widely used AI tools for writing code, planning businesses, brainstorming ideas, and even discussing personal matters. However, a recent post has put Anthropic’s AI chatbot under scrutiny. The post claims that conversations shared through Claude can be discovered via Google Search using a simple search query. If true, then it’s a big privacy concern, as the chats could contain sensitive pieces of code or the personal matters of the users. The company is yet to say anything on the matter. SurveyAccording to a post shared by Vaibhav Sisinty on his official X platform, when he searched ‘site:claude.ai/share’ on Google, it revealed a large number of publicly shared Claude conversations. These pages include coding projects, business ideas, research notes, creative writing, and other AI-generated work.

He further added that when users click the Share button in Claude, the platform creates a public webpage that anyone with the link can access. If search engines are allowed to crawl that page, it can also become searchable on Google. While some users intentionally share conversations with colleagues or friends, others may not realise that these pages could later appear in search results.

Sisinty also clarified that some of these chats are intentionally shared online, while many users are likely unaware that their shared conversations can end up being publicly indexed. Do note that not all conversations between users in Claude are getting indexed on Google. The search engine decides which pages to index. Thus, many of those shared may never become visible. Still, if the shared page becomes indexed, it is easy to find using Google.
How to be safe
If you use Claude frequently and don’t want your shared conversations to appear on the Google search page, then open Settings > go to Privacy > check the Shared chats section to see which conversations have been shared.

Make sure that chats that contain personal details, passwords, financial information, confidential work, or sensitive business plans are deselected. Moreover, when you share a conversation again, keep in mind that the conversation may become accessible to anyone with the link and could also be indexed by search engines, so check the sharing details once.
