India’s first Metaverse wedding had over 500 guests

Abhijeet Goel, a tech entrepreneur, and Dr Sansrati Jain, a pedodontist (dentist for children) who met on a matrimony site got married on February 5, but in the Metaverse! They're the first Indian couple to conduct their wedding in the metaverse. The wedding was conducted on YUG Metaverse, a made in India metaverse platform.

For those unfamiliar with the term metaverse, it is a virtual reality environment that can be accessed by users via their avatar.  It mimics the real world and connects you globally in a simulated reality.

First Indian wedding in the metaverse

The Tamil Nadu couple who had to cancel their plans for a destination wedding due to covid restrictions decided to opt for a wedding in the metaverse. This allowed them to include all their friends and family across the globe without breaking any protocols. Abhijeet was introduced to the concept of YUG by Utkarsh Shukla (YUG co-founder) with whom the event was planned and executed.

Unlike months of preparations for a wedding, this online virtual wedding was planned in merely a week. More than 500 guests registered for the wedding and had the freedom to choose and change avatars, walk, dance and enjoy the wedding without being physically present there. The entire wedding ceremony was virtually visualised on a screen, so the guest could partake in the celebrations. The guests were given discount coupons and the couple opted for Fabelle, the premium luxury chocolate brand, as a gifting partner.

First metaverse wedding in India

The physical wedding was held in Bhopal but the couple chose a beachside-themed wedding in the metaverse. One of the highlights of the wedding was the dance floor and the gift counter. The online union was conceptualised, organised and executed by the media agency Wavemaker India for ITC Ltd. and Matrimony.com.

The wedding sure was memorable for the couple as well as the guest who attended the event. The metaverse may transpire to become the next big destination for weddings. Wait for your e-vites.
