India, ICANN to set up center to ramp up Internet security

The Center for Development and Advanced Computing (CDAC) has tied up with the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to develop a research facility that will help prevent cyber attacks and security threats. The facility will be known as Center for Excellence in DNS Security.

“We are always in doubt when accessing the internet whether whatever is being shared is visible to someone else. We need to dispel this fear, which is associated to the internet,” J Satyanarayan, secretary, department of telecommunications is quoted as saying.

The two sides on Thursday signed an expression of intent with regards to setting up the research facility. Representatives from from the CDAC, an agency of the union ministry of communications and IT, and the ICANN also discussed ways to co-operate on issues related to governance and management of the Internet infrastructure.

Union Minister Kapil Sibal called for a “consensual approach” to develop an institutional framework of the web.

“India is a natural multi-stakeholder society. It shouldn’t be a huge effort [for India] to lead us in this space of multi-stakeholderism,” ICANN president and CEO Fadi Chehade said at the FICCI conference, later in the afternoon.

“This centre will play a central role in ensuring the security and stability of the Domain Name System. The Internet has become one of the world’s most valued resources and it deserves nothing less than full global cooperation and collaboration in developing concrete solutions to combat threats to the DNS,” said Chehade of the new research facility.
