Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is reportedly working on a new AI chip, internally called Frozen v2,  that could make Gemini AI models faster and more power-efficient. The chip is expected to launch in 2028. The Information reported that Frozen v2 is expected to be much more efficient than Google’s current AI chips. The chip may be between six and 10 times more efficient than Google’s existing AI chips, when measured by the number of AI tokens it can generate using the same amount of power. So, this means Gemini models may be able to produce responses more efficiently while using less energy.

“Our teams are constantly researching and experimenting with new innovations to deliver maximum performance and efficiency for our users and customers,” Google told TechCrunch. “While not every project moves into production, this rigorous exploration is central to our full stack approach. By co-designing our hardware and software from the ground up, we ensure our systems are integrated and highly optimized for real-world workloads.”

Many AI companies are building their own chips instead of depending entirely on other manufacturers. This has become important as demand for AI computing power is growing. Custom chips can help companies run AI models more efficiently, save on operating costs and reduce their reliance on external suppliers.

Another reason behind this shift is Nvidia’s position in the AI chip market. Many AI companies rely on Nvidia’s hardware.

Google is not the only company taking this approach. In June, OpenAI introduced its first custom chip called Jalapeno. Earlier this month, it was reported that Anthropic is in talks for a chipmaking partnership with Samsung. Alphabet has also been investing heavily in AI. Earlier this year, the company said it plans to spend between $180 billion and $190 billion.

Following The Information’s report on the Frozen v2 chip, Alphabet’s stock increased by around 3 per cent on Monday.
