Google has announced Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar, bringing a more visual and interactive experience to AI conversations. The new feature adds a digital avatar that can listen, see and respond with both speech and video in near real time. “Building on the momentum of last week’s Gemini 3.8 Live launch, today we are excited to introduce Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar – bringing near real-time visual presence to our native live dialogue models,” the tech giant announced in a blogpost.

The Live Avatar feature combines audio and visual inputs to make conversations feel more natural. It can process what a user says and what it sees at the same time. The avatar then responds using voice, facial expressions and video.

Google says the feature also supports asynchronous tool calling. This means the AI can perform tasks in the background while continuing to speak with the user. For example, it can check information or complete a task without stopping the conversation.

The feature is also designed for multilingual conversations. Google says Live Avatar supports 97 languages. It can switch between languages while adjusting its lip movements and facial expressions to match the spoken language.

Businesses can choose from a selection of preset avatars with different appearances and voices. Google also allows organisations to create custom avatars. Developers can use a high-quality reference image to create an animated avatar that retains the look and style of the original character. However, custom avatar creation is currently limited to organisations through enterprise allowlisting.

Google has also added measures to make AI-generated content easier to identify. Content created by its AI products carries a SynthID watermark.
