Facebook has announced it will be updating its privacy settings, which the company says will give users greater control over the content they publish on the social network. The updates will begin roll out at the end of this year.
The update includes new privacy shortcuts, an easier-to-use Activity Log, and new ways to manage/remove tags from photos. Facebook has also added new in-product education, which is aimed at making key concepts around controlling sharing clearer, for example in-context reminders about how stuff users hide from Timeline may still appear in news feed, search, and other places.
“We continue to strive toward three main goals: bringing controls in context where you share, helping you understand what appears where as you use Facebook, and providing tools to help you act on content you don’t like,” says Facebook’s Samuel W. Lessin.
Privacy shortcuts
Facebook has introduced a new icon on the toolbar, which allows users to access it from whatever page they are on. The icon helps manage things such as “Who can see my stuff?” “Who can contact me?” and “How do I stop someone from bothering me?” Users can also access Help Center content from these shortcuts.
App Permissions
When a user logs into a new it asks for permission to use your info to personalize his/her experience. Some apps also ask to post to Facebook. Earlier, two requests appeared as part of the same screened and happened at the same time. But now users will start to see the requests happen separately, so that users have more control on what they share. In-product Education
The in-context notices will now appear throughout Facebook. The notifications will help users understand, in context, what content is still visible to others, despite hiding.
Updated Activity Log
The updated Activity Log features new navigation, allowing users easily review their activity on Facebook, such as likes and comments, photos, and posts tagged in. The Activity Log also has new ways to sort information, for example: Now you can quickly see public photos you’re tagged in and have hidden from your timeline, but which still appear in other places on Facebook.
Tags Management
Within the updated Activity Log, there’s a Request and Removal tool for taking action on multiple photos you’re tagged in. Go to the “Photos of You” tab, select multiple photos, and ask friends to take down the shots you don’t like – you can even include a message about why this is important to you.
